Daily Routine: Mundane or Sure

We all have daily routines. They’ve become so mundane we do them on autopilot such that if we skip any, we’re lost. What’s your daily routine?

Here’s mine

1. I wake up sometimes at the same hour days consecutively and other times much later depending on my previous night’s activities or sleep pattern.

Some days I try to roll back to sleep (just being honest), other times much as I try, I can’t. So I reach for my Bible – so glad for technology and apps – and do my spiritual routine. My first routine is my only spiritual one; the rest are mundane. My first routine sets my day.
I read, study, meditate on the Word, and have a conversation with Papa. I had been “so good” for years consistently being present and punctual to meet Papa; then He switched it up and threw me into panic mode or was it I who did and, when I showed up, Papa had gone to His next appointment. Man, it took several months to return to rhythm again.

2. I then stretch (warm up) and follow with my exercise. Exercise could be a 30-60+ minute walk, jump-roping, jumping jacks, and/or a visit to the gym.

3. My mental routine is engaging in word games. Word Master is my favorite and I love playing scrabble.

4. I set my phone on Focus Mode every day. This enables me to take care of my daily itinerary undisturbed as well as keep “life drainers” at bay. This is my blog time. You might be surprised to hear that I write everyday. I have so many drafts, ideas that I have started but yet to post. I return phone calls when I take my breaks. Some same day; others within forty-eight hours. Allowing your phone to ring unanswered is often misconstrued as intentionally ignoring the call and one’s obliged to give an explanation as a courtesy. Hence iPhone’s Focus Mode is a lifesaver.

The above routines take different time frames. Of course, meals are in-between these routines. And some days, I take extra walks in the evening.

The 24-7 Unchangeable Routine

Every hour, I am intentional about being my best self, holding myself on values inculcated and developed over the years. A choice that I make to be good, true, kind, honest, authentic, and respectful to self and others.

This year, however, I’m switching things up a notch.

Mundane or Structured

Routine (repetitive tasks) can be boring. Yet, I’m not a boring person. Yes, I like structure, but I welcome creativity, the idea of thinking outside the box that there can and are several ways to do things. I watched Happy Gilmore back to back over the Christmas break. I enjoyed it and related to it a 100%. Well, not his destructive mode, but expressing his non-conventional self in a structured environment.

The only caveat, for switching up my daily routines, will be to inform Papa in advance what schedule we’ll be on this year so He can be present for me.

My daily routines although will continue, but a few will be increased either in quality, quantity, and or both. I’ve also thought of adding couple more ideas. I’ll inform you at a later time of what these are and if they’re colliding or collaborating with existing routines.

So, daily routines are what they are; what you do routinely everyday. They are yours; mundane or structured, and yours to decide. And you also can switch or notch them up if they get boring. But if you’re one who gets lost when an item is out of its usual place, then leave your daily routine as they are irrespective of what the year is. 😊

  1. Hey Joel, Happy New Year to you. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your daily routine. I love that you start your day with prayer.
What part of your routine do you look forward to the most?

  2. My routine is pretty creatively simple; woke up, hug my wife and kid then we have prayer, prepared for work and go for midweek services if there is any. Gisting hour starts by 7pm while dinner is on the gas, read a couple, write blog posts, return WhatsApp messages then go and rest for the day by 11pm or 12am
