2024 NBA All Star Starters

The 2024 NBA All-Star Starters have been announced. Ten (10) players (5 each from the East and West) out of a total of forty (40) were voted to start.

NBA has over 400 players; each a star in his own right. It is therefore an honor to have these ten selected by fans as their core stars.

The 3rd Returns, which was announced on the 18th, was the final fans vote. The voting ended on the 20th. I believe that the remaining 2 days were for the media and players to vote.

Giannis Antetokoumpo of the Milwaukee Bucks led overall with a total of 4.3 million votes. (List courtesy of Sporting News). If you’re interested in the detailed voting results, click here.

Subjectivity vs Objectivity

I’m happy for all the All Star Starters, particularly the first-timers. I am however surprised that couple or so didn’t make the list. Some thoughts were that few players were snubbed; see ESPN’s take on that.

Whichever way one views the Starter results, it’s imperative to note that only ten each of the total NBA player pool can be selected. That’s less than 10% which is not much. As such, sone feelings will be hurt.

However, my take is that the selections were apples-to-oranges and indeed not apples to apples. For example, a team with all members 95-100% active for games, and one dominant star player is not the same as a dominant player with 50-60% active team players; irrespective of the reason for inactivity.

Also, the Team’s key players get ample playing minutes when compared to the rest. As such, they are in the forefront of fans. Fans will remember them more and, not surprisingly, vote for them more. Anyhow,

We await the announcement of the reserves, which will be selected by the league’s coaches, on February 1st.
