What is Good Friday
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It’s a solemn day observed by Christians worldwide, reflecting on the sacrifice Jesus made for humanity’s salvation.
It also marks the end of Lent, the fasting “period of 40 days during which many Christians remember the events leading up to and including the death of Jesus Christ.” (BBC)
The “good” in Good Friday is believed to come from the old English term “God’s Friday” or “Holy Friday.”
The Holy Weekend encompasses Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. In some cultures, it also includes Easter Monday.
Holy Saturday is a time of reflection on Jesus’ descent into hell and anticipation of his resurrection. Easter Sunday celebrates Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, signifying victory over sin and death. Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday and is a national holiday in many countries. In some places it is called Ball Monday.. It is the culmination of the Holy Weekend, symbolizing hope and new life for Christians.
Explaining Easter Sunday and Jesus’ resurrection to a 6 year old
If I were to explain Easter Sunday to my six-year old niece and nephew, or to a non-Christian, this is what I’d say:
Easter Sunday is like the happiest day of the year for Christians because it’s when we celebrate Jesus coming back to life. Imagine Jesus was like a superhero, and even though it seemed like he was gone forever, he came back because he was so powerful and loved us so much. It’s like a big party to say thank you to Jesus for showing us that even when things seem really bad, there’s always hope for something good to happen. (Right here is the best description of Jesus’s resurrection). It’s like a big, joyful celebration of love and new beginnings!
Imagine Easter Sunday is like the best surprise ever. It’s like waking up one morning and finding out that something amazing you thought was gone forever is back again. Just like how flowers bloom after winter, Easter Sunday is like a beautiful, bright flower blooming after a long, dark time. It’s all about happiness, joy, and the feeling that anything is possible because Jesus showed us that love and life can conquer anything, even death.
Resurrection
The essence of the resurrection is hope, redemption, and eternal life. It’s the cornerstone of the Christian faith, symbolizing that death is not the end but rather a new beginning. The resurrection teaches us that even in our darkest moments, there is the possibility of renewal and transformation. It’s a powerful reminder of the enduring love and grace of God, offering believers comfort, strength, and the promise of salvation.
The essence of the resurrection is also about victory over sin and death. It signifies Jesus’ triumph over the forces of evil and his ability to offer forgiveness and redemption to all who believe in Him. The resurrection demonstrates God’s power to overcome any obstacle, bringing light and hope into the world. It’s a profound affirmation of faith and a reminder that through Jesus, we can experience true freedom and eternal life with God.
We have HOPE, Stay in Faith
Here’s an encouraging word that popped up while I was writing this post. I was 🤔, I don’t know the Pastor nor have I ever heard of her. But, I clicked on it. And God! it sure blessed me. I hope it does bless you, too.
Happy Good Friday,
Happy Resurrection,
and Happy Holy Weekend, my friend.
Stay in Faith and stay in Hope.
