Citizenry of the Kingdom of God

Divine Citizenship

Introduction

Citizenship has its privileges, and unfortunately drawbacks. The type of passport you hold could either give you smooth access to, or hinder you from, certain parts of the world.

Being a citizen of the Kingdom of God is no different; it comes with both its benefits and drawbacks. Yet, you have immunity and innumerable access to the world, albeit in the spirit.

What does it mean to be a citizen of the Kingdom of God in Christ Jesus

Being a citizen of the kingdom of God in Christ Jesus is a profound identity that encompasses both privileges and responsibilities. Unlike earthly citizenship, which is tied to geographical boundaries and governmental structures, citizenship in God’s kingdom transcends these limitations, offering a spiritual inheritance rooted in eternal truths. This post explores what it means to be a citizen of the kingdom of God, supported by scripture, and highlights the benefits and challenges associated with this divine citizenship.

1. A New Identity

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
(2 Corinthians 5:17)

Being a citizen of the kingdom of God means adopting a new identity in Christ. This identity is not based on nationality, ethnicity, or social status but on one’s relationship with Jesus. This new identity transforms how believers see themselves and others.

2. Living According to Kingdom Values

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33).

Citizenship in God’s kingdom requires living by a set of values and principles that reflect God’s character. This includes love, humility, service, and righteousness. Believers are called to be ambassadors of Christ, demonstrating His love and truth in their daily lives.

3. Access to God’s Promises

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus"
(Philippians 4:19)

As citizens of God’s kingdom, believers have access to all of God’s promises. These promises include provision, protection, and the assurance of His presence. Trusting in these promises allows believers to live with confidence and hope.

The Mission of Kingdom Citizens

1. Proclaim the Gospel

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you"
(Matthew 28:19-20).

One of the primary responsibilities of citizens in God’s kingdom is to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. This mission is known as the Great Commission, and it involves making disciples of all nations.

2. Serve Others

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45)

Kingdom citizens are called to serve others selflessly, reflecting the love and compassion of Christ. This service can take many forms, from meeting physical needs to offering emotional and spiritual support.

3. Promote Justice and Peace

"Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow"
(Isaiah 1:17)

Citizens of God’s kingdom are also called to be agents of justice and peace in a broken world. This involves standing against injustice, advocating for the oppressed, and working towards reconciliation and healing.

Overcoming Challenges as Kingdom Citizens

1. Endurance in Trials

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance"
(James 1:2-3)

Citizens of God’s kingdom will face trials and tribulations, but they are called to endure with faith and perseverance. God promises to be with His people in the midst of their struggles, providing strength and comfort.

2. Maintain Faithfulness

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong"
(1 Corinthians 16:13)

Staying faithful to God and His commands can be challenging in a world that often promotes contrary values. Kingdom citizens must rely on God’s word and the Holy Spirit to remain steadfast in their faith.

Let’s delve into the benefits and drawbacks of belonging to the citizenry of the Kingdom of God in Christ Jesus.

Benefits

1. Eternal Life

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life"
(John 3:16)

One of the most significant benefits of being a citizen of God’s kingdom is the promise of eternal life. This promise is not just about an afterlife but begins in the here and now through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

2. Peace and Joy

"And the peace of God,
which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7)

Citizens of God’s kingdom experience a peace that surpasses all understanding and a joy that is not dependent on circumstances. This inner peace and joy stem from the assurance of God’s presence and His sovereignty over all aspects of life.

3. Spiritual Guidance and Wisdom

"But the Advocate,
the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send
in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you"
(John 14:26)

Believers have access to divine wisdom and guidance through the Holy Spirit. This helps them navigate life’s challenges and make decisions that align with God’s will.

4. Community and Fellowship

"For where two or three gather in my name,
there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20)

Being part of the kingdom of God means belonging to a global family of believers. This community offers support, encouragement, and accountability.

Drawbacks

Like everything else, there are drawbacks that come with belonging to the citizenry of the Kingdom of God. But know that we have a helper and advocate always. Those drawbacks include:

1. Persecution and Opposition

everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted"
(2 Timothy 3:12)

Followers of Christ often face persecution and opposition because their values and beliefs conflict with the world’s standards. This can manifest in various forms, from social exclusion to physical harm.

2. Self-Denial and Sacrifice

"Then he said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be
my disciple
must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me'"
(Luke 9:23)

Living as a citizen of God’s kingdom requires self-denial and the willingness to make sacrifices. This includes prioritizing God’s will over personal desires and sometimes making difficult choices.

3. Spiritual Warfare

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms"
(Ephesians 6:12)

Believers are engaged in a spiritual battle against the forces of evil. This warfare can be intense and requires vigilance, prayer, and reliance on God’s strength.

In summary, being a citizen of the kingdom of God in Christ Jesus is a transformative identity and profound privilege that comes with incredible benefits and significant responsibilities. However, it also comes with challenges. Despite the challenges, believers can find strength and encouragement in God’s promises and the support of the Christian community. Let us strive to live out our citizenship with faithfulness, courage, and love, reflecting the glory of God in all we do.

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill that cannot be hidden" (Matthew 5:14)

As we journey through life as citizens of God’s kingdom, let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2) with conviction and courage. May we continually seek to grow in our relationship with Him, trusting in His guidance and relying on His strength. Together, let us advance His kingdom, bringing hope and light to a world in need.
