Do you believe that God speaks? Do you believe that God speaks to you, or is speaking, and wants to speak to you?
God speaks all the time and more so at the end of a year/beginning of a new one. In reviewing a prior year and getting ready for the next, it is wise to know the ways God speaks so that we can align ourselves to hear what He will say (or is saying) to us. Granted that the new year 2021 has begun, do you know what God is saying to you for the year? It’s a good time to align ourselves with what God is saying for He is speaking.
The 10 Ways God Speaks
- The Holy Bible contains several examples where God spoke
and is thus the primary waythat
God speaks. Every other waybecomes
secondary and must align with His Word.
God speaks through men and women of God
God speaks through dreams and visions
God speaks through placing ideas into your heart
God speaks through people; even babies and children
“But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.”
Jeremiah 1:7 KJV
God speaks allegorically and symbolically
God spoke through a donkey (Numbers 22:28) (and can probably speak through your pet today.)
God speaks in His still small voice.
God also speaks audibly as if you heard a vocal word from your parent, spouse, or a friend. (1 Samuel 3:4-14)
- God can speak through non-believers
I’ll reiterate that the Bible also contains men/women, and even satan’s, speeches. Please know the difference.
It is important that you know the way God speaks to you so that you will be quick to respond, quick to act, and because “the sheep knows the voice of the shepherd.” (John 10:14). But I can tell you that God can, and does, change that way for several reasons. The key is to pay attention and you’ll be able to grasp it when the change happens. Of course, God does not change once and expect you to grasp it immediately – He “works” with you till you grasp it.
It is also equally important to know how God speaks to you and judge it with His Word in The Bible. God will never contradict His Word. Whatever you hear God speak to you must align with His Word. As an example, it is ridiculous to state that God told you to marry another’s spouse because His Word says that He hates adultery.
As a precaution before acting, it is okay to ask God to confirm what you heard. (Judges 6:36-40). Some times our flesh and emotions can get in the way and subjectively misinterprets what we heard. As such, having a confirmation is a precautionary measure.
Blockers to hearing God
Though God speaks, and He is speaking, all the time, we might not hear what God is saying to us for several reasons which includes:
- Sin without confession or repentance
- Too busy
- Not communicating with Him
- Not looking for Him
- Not understanding His ways or the way He speaks
- Lack of knowledge, or proper interpretation, of His Word
- Some folks have been known to be unable to hear when ill.
Desire to hear God Speak?
If you desire to hear God speak, the first step is to tell Him. “I desire to hear You, God. Please speak to me.” Start reading your Bible if you haven’t already been doing so. God will answer and take you through His process uniquely yours.
Finally, it is not enough to hear God speak. What is much more important is to act on what you heard. Faith without works is dead. (James 2:24, 26).
Has God being speaking to you? If so, how? Feel free to share in the Comments. Thanks
